The preindustrial sugar cane museum
Published:
Dear guests, today we offer you an unique experience here in Europe: the possibility to see how it worked one of the last and unique sugar cane factories in Europe. In this museum you will discover the manufacturing and commercialisation sugar processes between the 13th and 18th centuries in Spain. This museum offers an educational tour through nearly one thousand years of sugar cane culture, what will let you understand the history of the tropical coast of Granada. In addition to this, it preserves the oldest mill in Europe and its tool collection is impressive. This museum reflects the important position that Motril had at an international level in relation to sugar cane production. The museum of pre-industrial sugar cane is located near the Casa de la Palma on the ruins of an old sugar mill. It is true that it's not the only one in the area, because in Salobreña you can find another big factory that was modernized during the XXth century and which was on working until 2006. If Motril was the oldest mill in Europe, Salobreña's one is the last working. Sugar cane crops were typical of the tropical coast landscape until the increased competitiveness with cheeper american companies. This means that this culture was forgotten with the last sugar cane production. Nowadays, farmers have actualized their products to the international markets demands: mangos, avocados and other tropical fruits are the top now.
