Maro and their beautiful beaches

Published:

Maro (municipal district of Nerja) is a Spanish village, belonging to the province of Malaga (Andalusia), and located on the edge of the province of Granada. The village of Maro, which owes its name to a plant, has a population of approximately 800 inhabitants.

It is located on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea, at the eastern end of the Costa del Sol, at the foot of the Sierra Almijara, between fields. It has very fertile lands, of which most of its inhabitants still live, being this the greatest of sustenance, accompanied by tourism that expressly comes to visit their paradisiacal natural beaches.

It is in Maro where the Cueva de Nerja is located, declared a 'Site of Cultural Interest', which is part of the Spanish Historical Heritage with the category of Archaeological Zone. It was also known for a Spanish television series (Verano Azul) that placed it on the map between 1979 and 1980.

Maro Beaches
Cala Barranco de Maro

It is located at the mouth of the Barranco de Maro. It is accessed after kilometer 294 of the N-340 Nerja-Almería. The interest of this cove is more for its secluded atmosphere than for the bathing.

The access is very difficult, you will probably have to park your car and walk several kilometers along paths surrounded by sugar cane fields and subtropical crops, where the use of sports shoes is recommended.

La Caleta de Maro or small cove

It is a wonderful cove that everyone should visit, as it was named the second best beach in Spain by the Antena 3 television network, where it received 57,299 votes.

If you decide to visit it, I advise you to get up early, since parking is difficult. In addition, go with supply, it lacks some services such as restaurants as it is a coastal strip with a protected area.

Maro Beach

Maro Beach, also known as Cala de Maro, is considered one of the best beaches in Spain.

It is a hidden enclave between the natural area of the Cliffs of Maro - Cerro Gordo and agricultural land and, from which you can see the remains of an old Arab watchtower. All this gives it a special wild charm.

Due to having a coastal strip with a protected area, this beach doesn’t have additional services, so you will have to be careful and bring everything you need to enjoy a relaxing day at the beach.

Their waters are perfect for snorkeling or diving and discovering the impressive variety of existing marine fauna. You will be surprised by how many fish you can see, so you should not forget your diving glasses.

Kayaking is also recommended, doing a route in Burriana and Maro will offer you a different and spectacular view of the area. There are many waterfalls in this place, such as the one formed by the Guaro River, highlighting the Cascada Grande de Maro. You can also visit caves formed with the same limestone rock that gave rise to the well-known Caves of Nerja.

Molino de Papel Beach

It is a beautiful beach whose name comes from an existing mill in the vicinity, which was dedicated to the manufacture of paper. It is a beach of about three hundred meters located at the foot of the Maro cliffs, at the mouth of the La Miel River and the Colmenarejos stream.

It could be said that of all the beaches in Maro, this is the most unspoilt of all and for this reason it lacks any type of service.

Las Alberquillas Beach

It is a totally virgin beach without any type of services, more than a small shower with direct water from a spring that comes from the mountains.

If you are looking for a beach in Maro without crowds, this is yours.

Cala del Pino

It is a semi-nudist cove with low occupancy (due to its difficult access), where clothing is optional. It is a cove with crystal clear and clean water that is also very suitable for snorkel. Its access is by a steep path of about two hundred meters, which goes from the N-340 to the shore.

El Cañuelo Beach

Incredible beach located on the outskirts of Nerja (after Maro) with restricted access to vehicles in summer due to its conservation, which makes it even more charming. To access it, there are several minibuses that make the round trip from the beach to the N-340 road for a price of € 2 per person (round trip).

This is the Maro beach that I recommend to everyone who comes to visit it. It is a very clean beach, with crystal clear water that invites you to dive and get to know its abundant marine fauna and flora.

It is known for its numerous underwater caves. Like Cala del Pino, this is a semi-nude beach where clothing is optional. Its access is through a short walk from the national highway.

Dear guest, if you are in one of our villas I recommend you take a day to visit Maro, both for its beaches and to see the Caves of Nerja. I leave you the Google Maps link so that you can find it easier:
